Fire Retardants Applied on Site
NBT-Approved Fire Retardant Treated Wood Products with Documented Properties
Control systems are in place to ensure that the right amount of fire retardant is applied so that the intended use is achieved. Various control systems are necessary for film-forming and non-film forming fire retardant treatment. These control systems were established in 2012 by NBT, see next page.
2. Fire Retardant Applied on Site – Finishing
Fire protection applied by surface treatment on the construction site are to meet the same requirements as industrially manufactured products, but the method of examination differ. The underlying documentation is very important and must be specified. Fire retardant applied by surface treatment can currently only be used indoors, thus requiring only use class INT, see page New classes. Three types of fire resistance can be achieved by surface treatment in place of wood products:
- Higher surface classification, e.g. class B-s1, d0
- Lining, e.g. fire resistance classification K210 / B-s1, d0
- Higher fire resistance classification, e.g. REI 30
This page presents wood products with documented properties for both fire resistance classification and use classification. Products must have a control systems in place that shows that the application on site is in compliance with the achieved classification.
The information in the tables below is checked by SP Wood.

2) Attn. It is important to indicate increase in comparison to non-coated elements.
-
For products to be reported above they are required to have testing documentation for:
- Fire resistance classification, e.g., in accordance with EN 13501-1 for surface classification and EN 13501-2 for fire resistance
- Use classification, e.g., in accordance with NT Fire 054 or CEN / TS 15912 of moisture resistance (use class INT for indoor use)
- Control systems, e.g. in accordance with ETAG 028 Fire Retardant products for higher surface classification supplemented with application control.
- Control systems, e.g. in accordance with ETAG 018-2 Fire Protective Products Part 2: Reactive coatings for fire protection of steel elements, as applied to building elements made of wood.
- In addition, information about CE marking, environmental impact, usage, etc. is desirable and to be presented in the full information.
