Woodnet.se: A New Organization for the Promotion of Fire Retardant Treated Wood

A non-profit organization for the promotion of fire retardant treated wood had its first meeting in the middle of last week. NBT, Nordic Association for Fire retardant treated wood, wants to spread factual information to anyone who might use the material.

In 2007, Birgit Östman and Lazaros Tsantaridis, both doctors at SP Wood Technology, started an association in the interests of fire retardant treated wood.

– Recently, there have been requests from the industry for a more formal organization says Lazaros Tsantaridis who is also secretary of Nordic Association for Fire retardant treated wood (NBT).

Wood Construction is on the Rise – and Thus the Need for Fire Protection

– There is a great need for independent information on fire retardant treated wood, he says.

The association wants to promote quality assurance of products, processes, suppliers and use. It will also work towards harmonization between the Nordic countries.

Information is disseminated through a very comprehensive website. It gives straight but detailed answers to for example questions about what fire retardant treated wood is, it's utility areas, it's advantages and disadvantages and the current fire requirements for construction in Sweden and the other Nordic countries. The website also offers companies the opportunity to list their CE-marked and approved products.

The association already has 35 members – and more are welcome. Chairman is Michael Westin, presents the organization's vision in a press release:

- The vision is that fire retardant treated wood will be the natural choice for consumers, the construction industry and the legislative body because of it's high quality, reliability and durability, he says.
